Under supervision, the Neuroimaging Research Project Associate supports clinical research efforts and uses magnetic resonance imaging methods in research studies. The incumbent will work as a Study Coordinator for longitudinal adolescent neuroimaging and neurocognitive studies. Duties will include: recruiting research subjects; screening for subject eligibility; coordinating subject appointments; biological samples collection and storage; acquiring substance use information and medical and mental history from adolescent and parent/informant research participants; assisting with administering diagnostic interviews and psychological symptom rating scales.

Incumbent will assist with conducting functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) as a certified scan operator and collect behavioral data. Duties also include maintenance of accurate and complete clinical research files; develop and maintain study databases; ensure compliance with study protocol; assist with grant submissions; assist with Institutional Review Board submissions; and serve as liaison between study facilities and investigators. Perform general lab assistance as needed.


  • Theoretical knowledge of psychiatry, psychology, or related field with a Bachelor's Degree in psychology or social sciences, and previous research experience.

  • Proficiency in using database software including Microsoft Office (Word, Access, Excel, and Power Point). Familiarity with Linux and AFNI for image data processing. Familiarity with RedCap and Limesurvey.

  • Demonstrated working knowledge of longitudinal research design and methodology and DSM-IV/V criteria.

  • Demonstrated familiarity with IRB procedures and ability to respond to IRB requests. Familiarity with NIH grant progress reports.

  • Experience performing research duties in a clinical research environment and coordinating research studies. Experience with following a research protocol in order to screen patients for eligibility, initiate study procedures, and collect data.

  • Demonstrated experience administering computerized and paper assessments and self-report questionnaires to adolescents and young adults.

  • Knowledge of MRI procedures and MRI safety. Experience screening MRI subjects for MRI contraindications. Experience collecting imaging sequences including functional and structuralMRI, diffusion tensor imaging, and functional connectivity.

  • Demonstrated ability to conduct functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) as a certified scan operator and collect behavioral data with adolescent participants.

  • Experience administering detailed clinical interviews to adolescents, young adults, and parents including collecting demographic, medical and mental health history, and substance use information using the SSAGA, CDDR, Timeline Followback; CBCL/YSR/ASR, Family History, and TBI

  • Experience administering neurocognitive assessments to adolescents and young adults including Ishihara Test for Colorblindness, Landolt-C, Rey-O Complex Figures test; Edinburgh Handedness Questionnaire, Stroop Colo-Word test, Grooved Pegboard, Ataxia, WAIS-IV Coding, WRAT- 4 Arithmetic and Reading, WebCNP, Delay Discounting, and PASAT-D.

  • Experience with performing functional and structural neuroimaging sessions of research participants. This includes running the UCSD 3T MR scanners and experimental paradigms developed in the laboratory
