Responsible for supporting the Mayfield Lab and algae biomass production facilities at the Biology Field Station, including performing algal culturing in both lab and greenhouse; maintaining of algae lines, participating in downstream processing of algae biomass; maintaining algae ponds and bags, growing and harvesting algae; ordering and maintaining equipment and lab supplies; and acting as laboratory safety coordinator.

Manage the day-to-day operations of lab and optimize work flow; serve as liaison with outside laboratories and companies; and provide work direction for lower-level staff, graduate and undergraduate students.

Significant aspects of the job will be responsible for algae biomass production and characterization, as well as research tasks associated with DOE funded program on algae biotechnology, including overseeing preparation of monthly and quarterly DOE reports.


  • Theoretical knowledge/degree in microbiology, molecular biology, plant physiology, or similar fields and 3+ years of experience or equivalent combination of education and experience.

  • Advanced understanding of algal biology and associated commercialization challenges.

  • Experience isolating and culturing diverse types of microalgae under both laboratory and outdoor conditions.

  • 2+ years of laboratory and project management experience.

  • Ability to work outdoors and lift 50lbs overhead.

  • Proven knowledge and ability to perform research independently.

  • Demonstrated ability to record scientific data in a well-organized laboratory notebook.

  • Demonstrated organizational skills to keep clear and accurate records.

  • Proven knowledge of specialized scientific terminology

  • Knowledge of library usage to locate journal in stacks and from network resources and copy specific articles

  • Knowledge of purchasing and reimbursement procedures. Skill in maintaining purchasing records, steady levels of lab supplies and training others in purchasing procedures

  • Experience and knowledge of proper handling, storage and disposal of chemicals, radioisotopes, biochemicals, hazardous chemicals and biohazardous materials including radioactive materials.


  • Working in an area with biohazardous materials including radioactive materials.

  • Background check required.
