SDSU Research Foundation Electronic Solicitation Assistant in San Diego, California

In partnership with the academic leadership of SDSU, University Relations and Development works to: raise public awareness of the need for private support; expand network of donors, partners, and friends; oversee campus fundraising campaigns and initiatives; recognize and steward donors; increase public awareness through marketing and communications; develop alumni support through alumni relations programs; and communicate with external constituencies.

Under immediate supervision of the Assistant Director of Electronic Solicitation, the Electronic Solicitation Assistant will focus on building alumni engagement, increase donor count, and fund-raise through strong and strategic electronic consistency across all platforms. This position will utilize strong graphic design and marketing background to assist in the creation and dissemination of electronic materials targeted to alumni and donor groups associated with the San Diego State University community.

Marketing Communications 45%

  • Assist with the day-to-day operations of the electronic solicitation team including but not limited to: digital communications, Strive crowdfunding campaigns, and The Great Give online give day campaign

  • Assist with the development and dissemination of electronic materials directed at targeted audiences within the SDSU community

  • Provide graphic design support for all electronic solicitation initiatives using Adobe Creative Suite and other graphic design tools

  • In collaboration with the Marketing and Communications Office as well as other campus constituents, work to gather written and graphical content for electronic solicitation campaigns

  • Collaborate with the Assistant Director of Electronic Solicitation, as a content developer, editor and manager for all electronic solicitation initiatives

  • Develop the communication strategy for Strive crowdfunding campaigns; provide written and graphical content for each campaign website and its associated e-solicitations, promotions and stewardship

  • Develop the communication strategy for The Great Give; produce marketing materials, email and direct mail communications and assist with website content and design

  • Design and deploy e-solicitations in support of SDSU Fund initiatives

Social Media 35%

  • Work with the Assistant Director of Electronic Solicitation on social media marketing plans, campaigns, and integrate strategies into sequential electronic annual giving practices

  • In collaboration with the Assistant Director of Electronic Solicitation and URAD’s MarComm staff, prepare a social media plan to solicit alumni and promote SDSU Alumni initiatives via social media advertising and messages

  • Using social media avenues, gather accurate record keeping and produce reports and analysis of campaigns and donor/alumni clicks and preferences

  • Responsible for SDSU Alumni’s social media strategy; manage content production, advertising campaigns, and reporting and analyses for Facebook, Twitter, Instagram and LinkedIn channels

  • Manage the social media strategy for Strive campaigns and The Great Give; produce social media content, place advertisements and produce reports

  • Maximize the effectiveness of SDSU Strive campaigns through collaboration with campus partners; provide direction in regard to social media and e-solicitation best practices

Reporting/Analysis 10 %

  • Assist with the compiling and data input for monthly reports to measure response rates, return on investment and more. This includes internal reports used to analyze variables and results of the electronic solicitation program. Review email reports to analyze open, unopened, unique click and e-commerce fulfillment rates

  • Work within the Elucian Advance database to analyze prospect data, work with university gift processing team to ensure data integrity and input information as it relates to the activities of the electronic solicitation team

  • Assist with the development and management of prospect lists within the Elucian Advance database

Stewardship 5%

  • Work with the Assistant Director of Electronic Solicitation and the Assistant Director of Annual Fund, Stewardship and Membership to assist with the development and implementation of donor relations and stewardship at the annual giving level

  • Assist with content development, copy editing and design of digital stewardship for SDSU Lifetime Membership and SDSU Annual Fund donors

Other Duties and Responsibilities as Assigned 5 %

  • Participate in training sessions and webinars.

  • Produce website audits and provide information design for,, and main SDSU Alumni Website

Knowledge and Abilities

  • Knowledge of general practices, methods and procedures related to social media relations, print and digital marketing, and messages

  • Knowledge of basic applicable copyright and other laws pertaining to written materials, social media, and confidentiality and sensitive information

  • Knowledge of understanding technology to include but not limited to: social media platforms, web based email distribution, graphic design and desktop publishing

  • Knowledge of social media marketing plans, campaigns and strategies

  • Knowledge of importing and exporting data among multiple operating systems

  • Knowledge of computer programs to include Adobe Creative Suite, Microsoft Office Suite, and Elucian Advance or other database applications or applicable software packages

  • Knowledge of developing communication strategies for campaign websites and e-solicitations

  • Ability to compile data for monthly reports to measure response rates on ROI

  • Ability to communicate effectively, both orally and in writing

  • Ability to demonstrate a high level of customer service and a high expectation for quality

  • Ability to demonstrate a high level of cross-cultural sensitivity

  • Knowledge of protocols and institutional etiquette related to media relations and advertisements

  • Strong interpersonal skills to develop and maintain relationships within the university, campus partners and alumni relations programs

  • Ability to develop content, copy editing and digital design

Preferred Qualifications and Special Skills

  • Progressively responsible full-time marketing experience

  • Progressively responsible full-time experience in a higher education development environment

  • Full-time experience working with electronic materials such as marketing pieces, solicitatio materials and newsletters

  • Previous marketing skills obtained through experience in a similar office environment or training program


  • Bachelor’s degree or equivalent.

  • Two years of progressively responsible full-time experience in an administrative environment or equivalent combination of related education and experience
